This what I observe with business owners who are just starting out and are oblivious to their content marketing strategy: they blatantly ask for their site visitors’ email addresses in exchange for a newsletter subscription.
I mean, don’t get me wrong. If the site that I’m following is one-of-a-kind and their content is really THAT good, then by all means, I’ll sign up to that newsletter.
I might forgive this lead magnet tactic with this sole exception.
But, let’s be honest here, most of the times, this isn’t the case.
So, if you’re reading this and you’re one of these people. then let me tell you why this technique isn’t as effective as you think it is.

First of all, let me tell you this: That content marketing strategy is outdated.
That may have worked so well in the past, but there are better lead magnets nowadays.
Staying updated with the current times will help your business succeed most especially in these competitive times.
Then, what should I do instead?
What you should be doing is simple, offer a more appealing bait.
Now, what’s better than a newsletter? Tons of things, actually.
Let me give you a list:
You can offer one or more kinds of Ebooks on your site. Just make sure that you place it strategically on your site. It should be relevant to the topic being discussed on the current page. (examples: Ultimate guides, checklists, top 10’s, facts, etc.)
FREE Video lessons
If you’re offering classes, this is a good lead magnet, as it gives your target audience a taste of your teaching methods/personality.
This one is best for companies that are selling products online.
